You want feces with those fries?

Forget the arguements about Billions in advertising and the whole ‘just get off the couch fatso’ intellectual comeback on obesity and fast food, this piece on Campbell Live last night had an excellent interview with the author of Fast Food Nation and pointed out that the actual food being sold tastes great but is total shit (literally) in terms of health. Interesting to see that the Fast Food industry is using Tobacco industry tactics now, moving away from the smart middle classes who are now not eating as much fast food, and aiming their marketing directly at the poor.

Ronald must die!

Huia and semisi - are you saying we should have unrestricted access to booze and ciggies?

haha all i said was i thought how insanely crazy the advertising is guys, nothing against the selling of the product. thats up to you all. we can still sell chocolate, fizzy drinks and shit burgers. just dont jam it peoples faces

No I'm saying why just pick on McDonalds all the time...is it just because they are a US corporation? Surely chocolate bars, being pure sugar and fat are equally worthy of condemnation?

All I'm asking Bomber, is where do we draw the line?

Good points guys and you are right - where do we draw the line because obesity has doubled sionce 1977 - this is suddenly a new problem that is getting worse and worse, so drastic action is needed and maybe we have to look at restricting advertising and heavy fat food in the same way we had to with ciggies and booze - let's not forget the original Coke was made with Cocaine, would the Semisi and huia of yesteryear be crying out, "What, dropping cocaine as an active ingredient, what's next - Opium - where do we draw the line". I think the first thing we need to do is realise that there is a real problem and it's not some pc thought police thing - but just look at a lot of the comments on this issue just on this site - peoples attitudes to the problem need to change, sometimes I honestly think half the ptoblem is that people in the middle just hate 'lefties' and automatricly disagree with them regardless of the point

I ate McDonalds for the first time in a month or more after going to the gym on Sunday afternoon. It tasted fantastic. I feel fine, and I'm in great shape.

Everyone is skinny in North Korea, with the exception of the Dear Leader, maybe we would all be better off living in a society like that?

You really hate McDonalds, don't you Bomber? This is like the third anti-McD's thread in a week. Is it because you blame them and their insidious advertising for your own fatness and subsequent inability to score any chick higher than a 4 out of 10?

Isn’t that one of the prices of democracy - people are free to be stupid.

They are also free to expose and introduce their children to drink, smokes, appalling eating habits and worse.

What’s they answer – state interference in the lives of stupid people ?? A tempting thought but not very practical.

In the UK there has been a parental backlash against the push for healthier food in schools with some parents objecting to their children being feed healthy ‘crap, believing take-aways are better and demanding for chips, pies etc. to be returned to the menu.

Democracy allows stupid people to breed and, to a large extent, allows them to live and bring up their children as they wish.

I often hear the cost argument, that ‘poor’ people have to feed their family on high fat crap because its cheaper than feeding them more appropriately – BS.

Even if it wasn’t BS that argument gets rather destroyed when you are behind some useless fat slob in the supermarket check-out and see them ask for a carton of fags - $80 ++. If you want to see that just go and do your shopping in Mangere – when I lived out that way I couldn’t stand it and started driving to Newmarket for my shopping.

Sorry but my (albeit anecdotal) observations and experience is, its not poverty but stupidity.

People are free to buy what they like, democracy in action.

As for banning things – I don’t eat fast food often but I like to have the choice now and then, and find McD’s handy for a cheap coffee and clean toilet when I am traveling.

I also get colds and it pisses me off that I can no longer buy cold remedies containing Pseudoephedrine because some morons use it to make illegal drugs. It also pisses me off that because of other morons I can no longer go to the beach and have a beer or glass of wine with a picnic.

Banning/limiting things affects me more than the people the controls are aimed at, another example of how my democratic rights are continually being diminished by stupid people and I am getting sick of it.

Anon you make very good points about Democracy – but I’m interested to hear your thoughts about the growing power of corporations as a threat to democracy – do any of us want to have a Government so heavy handed that it is checking lunch boxes at the school gate? Of course not – but should corporations have direct access via advertising directed at children? When we talk freedom – surely the competency of the person choosing must be taken into account – I don’t care what any adult over the age of 18 wishes to eat – but should children be bombarded with advertising that sets eating patterns for life? The issue is to restrict those things we know that can be harmful to public safety (it’s why we have traffic cameras everywhere) – sometimes being part of a society means you have to had over a certain amount of control, but in this case we aren’t talking about your right to vote – we are talking about banning junk food in schools and limit the excessive advertising aimed at kids – this is hardly the overthrow of the capitalist state is it?

GRIN - Great post luke

Actually I would have school lunch boxes checked, the morons who feed their kids crap constantly are guilty of child abuse and their children have a right to protection.

I am interested in your thoughts on stupidity and poverty. Are people stupid because they are poor, or, are they poor because they are stupid.

I have thoughts about how small business needs to be given breaks, by all levels of government, if we are to see them survive but I don't think anyone of any influence or consequence cares what I think. I just can’t remember the last time the PM or one of her crew phoned and asked me what I think.

Personally I think the days of the small business are (sadly) more or less over - for now that is. When you get to my age you see trends (like fashion) come and go, so perhaps in a few years or decades we will see the pendulum swing back in favour of the smaller/family business.

I would ban a lot of things, given the chance, including junk food in schools. I am happy to be banned from many things i.e. drink driving, however I wonder what the ban achieves as those who don't care do it anyway. So bans and rules only apply to people like me who would are unlikely to indulge in anti-social behaviour whether it was banned or not.

I am getting a bit sick of bans affecting my everyday normal life though – because a few morons get drunk and make trouble at the beach instead of targeting them I am banned from a glass of wine at a simple picnic – even when I don’t agree I stick to the rules. The anti-social are, to intents and purposes, exempt from the rules that were supposed to be targeted at them, nothing is done as even if they got a fine they wouldn’t pay it.

We are allowing the anti-social element to run things, instead of the law-abiding controlling them they are controlling us.

Incidentally you are very selective in your reading, questioning and answering …… a little – now what’s the word – disingenuous ??

Here's what I don't get about these fucking right wingers - I understand you make love to the free market each night with Adam Smith wet dream fantasies - but why in Gods name would you simply allow Ronald to have direct contact to your kid through the TV - why allow those billions spent to brainwash your own kid - these right wingers stomp up and down crying out about their right to eat hamburgers, fuming away at granny state, but are more than happy for their kids to be molested by Ronald in their own homes - what a trade off, your right to eat your burgers over the mental Sovereignty of your own kid - you guys really like your burgers.

Wow.
Anonymous makes some great points, coherently written, and bomber loses the plot entirely.

To who is that rant aimed at bomber?

"...these right wingers stomp up and down crying out about their right to eat hamburgers, fuming away at granny state, but are more than happy for their kids to be molested by Ronald in their own homes..."

WTF!
Are you for real?

Bomber. Take a look in the fucken mirror before you dare lecture others on how and what they feed their kids.

Oh and btw advertising is insidious, its everywhere and no matter how hard you try, kids quickly learn what the big yellow M stands for. Kids are not stupid.

You would know that if you were a parent.

Hows that bomber?

Just because the kids recognise the symbol, doesn't mean they get to eat it.
They know what alcohol is too, but they don't get to drink that either.
That is called good parenting.

I don't need a fascist like you to tell me how and what and when I can feed my children.

And bomber, you have no moral high ground here do you?
I will accept nutritional advice from Hamish Carter, but from you?
