Dramatic clawback has Govt breathing down Nats' neck

Dramatic clawback has Govt breathing down Nats' neck

Labour has fought back to within 5.2 points of National in the latest Herald-DigiPoll opinion survey. The clawback comes in a month when National's leader, John Key, has not been in the media spotlight nearly as much as Prime Minister Helen Clark. The poll rounds out a bad week for National, which fumbled the announcement of its intentions for health policy and also drew a hot public response when its deputy leader, Bill English, talked about partially selling some state-owned assets. The full impact of those events will not be seen until future polls, meaning the gap could close even further. The DigiPoll survey puts National on 44.8 per cent support, down 5.5 points on the August poll. That's its lowest rating in the survey since February. Labour is up 2.8 points to 39.6 per cent. The Greens are the only other party to pass the crucial 5 per cent threshold, rising 1.2 points to 7.2 per cent.

The inane joy our friends on the right and the joyful trumpeting of our friends on Kiwi Blog was never going to last long. National was never going to hold on to it's lead, ever. When I was listening to pundits last month telling us all that it was a National Government I just laughed, the lead that National had created was more to do with NZers natural dislike of elite, and with Labour in Government for 3 terms, they are starting to reek like the elite. When it comes down to actual policy, POLICY - not John Key's smile, POLICY - National has nothing, and when it does have something (privatize prisons, privatize assets, tax cuts oh and not even telling people that they intend to scrap limits on Dr fees WHILE announcing their health policy) - it's just the same old conservative bullshit that we have all seen fail time and time and time again. I really hoped that Key had more, that his first attempts at the game, like giving Charities a tax break, taking poor kids to Waitangi - things like that would actually show a new side of National, but peel back the veneer and it's the same old crap.

I remember someone posted a comment a couple of weeks ago in response to me on the Sunday newspaper brunch club saying that the Maori Party and the Greens could be the key to Labour staying in power and someone ridiculing that comment. I think this poll goes somewhere to propping that possibility up.

There's only one poll that counts ................ and helens bloody good at getting the numbers she needs in that poll.

.............. I've still got my fingers crossed for my perfect election result.

and that would be natianal winning the greatest share of the votes by a percent or two, but them being unable to form a govt because they are such a pack of horrible assholes.

....... I cant wait untill the nats start putting up their big flash electoral bill boards.

One little tin of blue paint.

One quick verticle brush stroke on the letter 'o'.

And hey presto its the natianal party.

...... and who'd vote for them ?

..it all goes to show - if a chimpanzee called Bozo featured on the news for 3 weeks running : Bozo would be preferred PM ... what a dumbass bunch kiwis have turned into ... sainsbury soundbites and a state tv channel that features Dancing with the Blahs and " how to look good naked ".
No in depth analysis of issues has left many kiwis relying on jackass reactionaries like Paul Henry and Danny Watson for their views and understanding of issues
If Labour loses this election they absolutely deserve it- they've helped turn this population into a bunch of witless, mall trawling, reality tv watching, shit food eating sloths who, like turkeys voting for an early xmas will vote national..forgetting - ( or unaware) that National is there only to serve its mates , meyers, fay, richwhite, shirtcliffe etc etc ad nauseum

Read the EFB you uninformed dickheads - Labour is facist (i.e. only advertising from "legitimate" lobby groups (read the Labour MPs' comments)). P.S. National is going to win next year and win well - deal with it.

We all agree that the EFB is fucked, it needs to focus on anonymous doners, as we have posted here in the past - but there needs to be some restraints on the dangers of plutocracy - this bill however is a joke and needs changing urgently.

P.S. National is going to win next year and win well - deal with it.
Grin - well let's see shall we, I don't think MMP will allow the status quo to rule like it once did, National have to reach out to more than white males if it wants to win.

Sorry I work in a law firm, Sorry you must have me mistaken for someone else.

If tax cuts is the only thing National has to offer, I believe you wont have your little taxs cut utopia anon. NZ needs more than that, one will hope most kiwis have a wider view than that.

National declaring selling of state assets is one that didn't go down well with everyone, even Grey-Power told them they need to re-think it all over again..

Privatisation is also one thats not working all to well. Who knows maybe National can run with the "Maaaris get to much speech" but if they have to reach more than the white male to win... looks like they might have to kiss some brown butts to do it...

I am incline to say "Pucker up boys"

It's pretty funny that people think that the government owning assets actually makes a difference

Look at AirNZ. Does we see them coming up with cheaper flights by themselve? No - only in the face competition with Virgin. Do we see them actiing for the good of NZ?
No - we see them trying to build up a cartel to raise domestic ticket prices with Quantas through code sharing agreements.

Now look at the SOES like Transpower, Meridian Energy and Mighty River. Has your power bill gone down recently?

I suppose it is also imperative to our economic security that vehicle testing be kept in NZ hands.

Please anon selling of govt asset isn't going to make things better over-night, your only fooling yourself with it ideology that it will pave the way to a bigger and brighter future of privatisation.

your utopia is in the US, move there if thats what you seek, privatised prisons, medical insurance for health care, for goodness sake, third world countries do better in health care.

even this countries elderly say to National pull your head in and re-think the selling of state assets... Its a lonely road for the NATS face it, its not good for them at the moment...

With all due respect, didn't the Government have to bail Air NZ out after their private sector dickhead leaders cocked up taking over Ansett which was a lemon after it was assett stripped and bumped off to greedy ole sheepish Air NZ? You can hardly hold that up as an example as to how Private is better than Government can you?

Now look at the SOES like Transpower, Meridian Energy and Mighty River. Has your power bill gone down recently?
Again, just because they are still acting selfish doesn't mean that we could force them to try harder? Won't those carbon neutral public energy companies get a couple of hundred million for their carbon credits and use that money to subsidise low income consumers? Not something you could see if we had sold them all off.

The National Party was, is and always will be the party for fascists.

How can Labour be both socialist and fascist?

The trouble with many of you younger people is the fact you have never lived. The fascist years of the 1990's and the second term of Labour -1987-90, are too long ago. I have lived through all back to the few great Kirk years, Muldoon the Nazi, and so on.

The people of NZ are slowly realising that smile from a millionaire who accidently lived in a state house as a child doesnt mean he's the key to the kingdom.
