Saudi king 'pardons rape victim'
The Saudi king has pardoned a female rape victim sentenced to jail and 200 lashes for being alone with a man raped in the same attack, reports say. The "Qatif girl" case caused an international outcry with widespread criticism of the Saudi justice system. The male and female victims were in a car together when they were abducted and raped by seven attackers, who were given jail sentences up to nine years. Press reports say King Abdullah's move did not mean the sentence was wrong.

I’m sorry – what? The pardon doesn’t mean the sentence was wrong? The sentence that shows womens rights are so degraded in Saudi Arabia that a women (after appeal let’s not forget) was seriously going to be imprisoned and then given 200 lashes because she was in a car with someone she wasn’t related to when they were gang raped????????????????? Oh. My. God. Why are our troops in Afghanistan? Doesn’t it sound like they are needed more in Saudi Arabia? Oh that’s right, these are the crazy fundamentalist Muslims WHO SELL US OIL, oh sorry, let’s go find some poor weak ones who have no oil to bomb and claim it’s all for freedom and democracy.

Maybe you should do some basic research before sprouting off.
Where did you ever get the idea that the afghans were weak? If you bothered to read about the history of the country instead upon relying on hysterical Noam Chomsky books you'd know the following.

Warfare has been a way of life for the various afghans tribes for hundreds of years in which they've defeated the Persians, British, Russians who were major powers at the time; the place is swimming with weapons and the terrain is excellent for guerrilla warfare.

Whereas the saudis are so weak militarily and economically that they can't even defend themselves or run their own oil industry without help from the US.

It`s funny how you turn an article about the idiocy and barbarity of sharia into a story about Western oppression, when it is only the pressure of the West which saved this poor woman.

Deano: "idiocy and barbarity of sharia"? Hang on, what do you know about sharia? Tell me. Let's see how extensive your readings and acquired knowledge on Islamic history of law is.

Any Muslim with a fair understanding of Islam knows the Saudi regime's system of law is in complete violation of Islamic teachings and its egalitarian spirit. Wahaabism (the political ideology adhered to by the Saudi state and endorsed by the British colonisers in early last century) is saturated with tribal Arab customary practices- in many cases date even before the advent of Islam. This case is yet another example of its discrepancy with Islam.

-Anti-Flag.

Anti-Flag is right, look at all the non Wahaabist Muslim countries that rushed to condemn the idiocy and barbarity of Saudi Arabia, such as.... um .... er... nevermind - Islam is the Religion of Peace!!!!tm.

WHAT!?!? Weren't you part of the the "no blood for oil" mob Bomber? Aren't the wars in Iraq and Afganistan all about OIL? You've changed your tune a wee bit there buddy, unless there is some other small country with no oil that the US have been bombing lately that we don't know about....

Anonymous 1: Yes, all those Western-backed dicatorships and despotic regimes will certainly come out and condemn a fellow despotic regime.

Anonymous 2: Afghanistan is still connected to oil for its geographical location is essential to tap into the oil-rich region around it.

Contrast the of the fury of the arab street when to danish cartoons were published to where a real person is being punished for a crime committed against her.

I can see the Muslim world has its heart in the right place.

I didn`t write that, but it means that the arab street reacts violently to any perceived attack on their culture and religion, ie all the rioting, murder and destruction over those Danish cartoons, but funny, not much about this poor woman, who had to be basically be saved by the outrage of the West. I did read that most Saudis opposed her sentence, however.

While our own legal system regularly lets us NZers down at least it tries to be in the 21st Century, and not the 11th.
