Tony Ryall explaining why he isn't paying parents to care for disabled children

This is Tony Ryall at his best - here is his bullshit press release explaining why the Government are appealing parents being paid to care for their own disabled children...

Better support for family caregivers recommended
Press Release by New Zealand Government at 12:05 pm, 22 Jan 2010

Health Minister Tony Ryall says the Government is considering ways to better support family members who care for their severely disabled adult children.

Today the Health Minister has announced the release of a report from the National Health Committee – “How Should We Care for the Carers, Now and into the Future? Manaaki tangata” – which the Minister received just before Christmas.

“While the NHC report does not recommend payment for family carers, it recommends a range of actions to provide better support for them which the Government will consider” Mr Ryall says.

“Late last year the Government also began looking at options to expand the individualised funding scheme and to provide better support for family carers.”

The Health Minister says the Solicitor General has advised him of his decision to today appeal a January 8 decision by the Human Rights Review Tribunal regarding family members who care for their severely disabled adult children.

“The Solicitor General strongly advises me that there are very significant legal issues about the decision that need to be examined.”

Mr Ryall says all New Zealanders have great admiration for the families who face the challenges of caring for a disabled relative.

“Supporting family carers is an important issue for New Zealanders. However it’s a complex matter balancing the interests of an individual’s autonomy, family responsibility and government contribution.”

...unbelievable - not one word as to why he is appealing parents attempt to look after their own disabled children, just a lot of bullshit about 'caring' - if the bloody Government cared they would pay parents to look after their disabled children, simple as that. Parenting a disabled child is a private hell we wouldn't want to wish upon any fellow citizen, what the hell is a Welfare State for if not to help these exact people?

Thank you for not dropping this one Bomber.

You've hit the nail on the head. Having a disabled child can be hell. For a start, you can pretty much kiss goodbye to anything resembling a normal life.

Ryall must have his 'evil trousers' on at the moment.

well, the buck stops with the govt. If Ryall wants to ignore the judgement of the court, there's no reason why he can't disregard the advice of the solicitor -general too( particularly if that advice breaches the BORA) that's why. Duh.

Yep. But governments don't care. That's what Prebble and Douglas have been trying to say for 15 years, in case you haven't been listening.

That's also why governments need to be out of our lived as much as possible, because only families, and to an extent communities, can really care about those in their midst.

Welfare State? Did I miss something?. What was all that Douglas Prebble Goff et al shit that happened in the 80's, followed by Richardson.... Have I just woken up after 20 years?

God Almighty, when will those that thought they'd voted for "Change" were in fact voting for a crowd who are trying to find ways of resurrecting a neo-lib agenda - it's just that the ideology has been proven a crock, so they need to dress it up in drag. It's just that they haven't quite decided on the colour. It will be a mix of Nat blue, insipid Act yellow and earthy Maori Party tones. Ryall's been experimenting for years = everytime he dresses in the morning.
We probably won't actually get real change from the policies of the past 2 and a half decades until the country is completely munted.
The seniors in this government are all busy doing a Faye and Ritchwite setting up their little retirement plans, and the juniors... ?? Paula Bennett - surely that's enough said!

You are more likely to be raped/murdered/abused by a family member than a stranger.

So don't you mean get families out of our lives gooner?

Idiot.
